Guiding Light: Maria and Hennessy’s Story
Maria, a mentor with the Reach Foundation, seeks to guide her students not only through the college preparation and application process but also in overcoming the unique barriers that many first generation scholars experience. Through her own experiences, Maria understands the cultural and familial pressures that first-generation Hispanic students face, allowing her to offer tailored support and guidance. Furthermore, her journey pursuing higher education as an undocumented student embodies resilience and determination - qualities that resonate with the students she mentors. As she reflects on the reason she began mentoring, Maria recalls a time when a mentor unknowingly played a pivotal role in her life. They instilled the belief that scholarships were attainable and college was within reach for her. Now, Maria strives to offer the same encouragement and support to students like Hennessy.
Hennessy, a first-generation college student, considers Maria as an integral part of her educational journey. She explains that Maria’s influence and perspective has been invaluable, both academically and personally. Hennessy was raised in Santa Clara, California, in a home that valued education. While Hennessy knew college was her goal, she faced several challenges, including limited financial resources. Determined to succeed, she secured a part-time job while attending school to pay for her housing and expenses during her freshman year.
As a second-year sophomore at San Jose State University, Hennessy is proud to be the first in her family to pursue a college education. Despite the challenges she has faced, Maria's unwavering support and encouragement have kept her focused on her goal of graduating with a bachelor's degree in Psychology. Beyond academics, Maria has also helped Hennessy's family understand and support her educational journey, bridging the gap between home and school.
In Maria, Hennessy has found not just a mentor, but a guiding light. Their shared experiences and cultural background have created a bond that extends beyond educational pursuits. Together, they are breaking barriers and paving the way for future generations of first-generation students to pursue their dreams of higher education.
